Three people were killed in a recent accident in the northbound section of Interstate 77 near Clanton Road in Charlotte, North Carolina. The accident reportedly happened in the early morning hours of April 20 when a BMW became trapped underneath a tractor-trailer.
North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said that the BMW had slammed into the back of the 18-wheeler and became pinned underneath. All three of the people inside the BMW died in the crash. Troopers blocked all of the highway’s lanes for a couple hours while investigating and cleaning up the scene.
At first, the driver of the tractor-trailer did not appear to realize that a car had hit his vehicle. He told troopers that he thought he had a flat tire and kept driving. He ended up dragging the vehicle a few thousand feet before coming to a stop. Responders had to call in a crane to pull out the BMW from underneath the truck.
Accidents involving tractor-trailers tend to be quite serious because of the size and weight of the vehicles involved. Following too closely behind a large commercial truck is dangerous, as the drivers of the trucks have very little visibility in the area close behind them. All motorists are encouraged to give truck drivers plenty of space, avoiding blind spots and stopping or turning lanes too quickly.
