Accidents and deaths for those who ride bicycles are on the rise; all over the country, people are being killed. Many others all over the country who have been killed in bicycle accidents are having these ghost bikes placed as a memorial. Often painted in a white color, they represent what the rider loved, or how old they were. When a six-year-old boy was killed after being hit by a car in Philadelphia a smaller bike was placed at his site to represent his age. At some locations, the bikes are being smashed to resemble the accident that the victim went through. In New York City, the ghost bikes are becoming most popular, likely due to the amounts of people that rely on bikes as their method of transportation in the congested city.
The group of cyclists who have formed this ghost bike organization are seeking to help riders be aware of the dangers of the road and find ways to let the public hear the stories of those who are victims of the accidents. Being involved in a bike accident is a scary thing, while bike riders may be harder to see on the road, they often have the right of way therefore making it the responsibility of the driver to be aware of the road.
