Bicycle Accident Rates Still High in North Carolina

When Results Matter Most, Hire a Heavyweight

A University in North Carolina has been praised for its strong support of bicycling and other alternative means of transportation over car travel. The school has been named a bicycle friendly university at the bronze level by a leading bicycle league and is respected nationally for its support of bicyclists. The city even has a Cross-City Trail and a River to Sea Bikeway for cyclists.

However, the county's average yearly crash rate for bicycle-car accidents is 2.5 per 10,000 people. This rate is substantially higher than the next highest county with a rate of just 1.9 crashes per 10,000 people. While increased numbers of bicyclists will increase the odds of a bicycle-car accident, the county is looking into ways to try and bring this rate down. Regardless of the numbers, bikers still flock to the area and make ample use of the city's biker-friendly trails.

Accidents between bicycles and cars can be extremely dangerous.
