Officers with the North Carolina Highway Patrol were called in to investigate the car accident caused by a 22-year-old female who was intoxicated at the time. She was heading west on Hiwassee Dam Road, traveling at a speed of 70 mph in a 55 mph zone, when she lost control of her vehicle. She then swerved off the road, down an embankment, and into a man on a riding lawn mower.
The victim, a 63-year-old male, was unable to move out of the driver's way in time and was struck with the full force of her excessive speed.
As a result of the car accident, the woman has been charged with driving while impaired, felony death by vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance.
