As Hurricane Irene pounded the east coast, emergency crews and police officers rushed around North Carolina helping injured people. Among those injured were six people who died in car accidents during the storm.
One of the victims, a 15-year-old girl, was driving through an intersection at which the lights had stopped working. She was struck by another vehicle and died instantly. Another teenager was injured in a separate car accident when the vehicle he was riding in became stuck in standing water. Other car accidents involved drivers losing control of their vehicles and failing to stay indoors during a serious storm.
News sources say that the storm claimed other lives as well in freak accidents. One man lost his life while surfing the treacherous waves caused by Irene while a young boy was struck by a tree that fell into his house.
